The following list comprises the second half of the essential skills for your future jobs as published by the World Economic Forum.
- Leadership and social influence
To be effective in the workplace, leadership involves much more than just the title or label of a “leader.” It requires the ability to influence and inspire not only those who report to you but also your colleagues and even superiors. Successful leadership also involves the ability to collaborate with a diverse group of professionals and navigate complex professional networks. Social influence skills are also critical in achieving success in the workplace.
- Technology use, monitoring and control
Technology is omnipresent, operating 24/7. It encompasses more than just social media platforms like Twitter, TikTok, and Facebook. In reality, it encompasses data, automation, and platform technology.
- Technology design and programming
As you continue to develop your technological skills, you may even be able to take it to the next level by creating your own technology products. The world of technology design and programming is becoming increasingly accessible to non-experts, and there are now more tools available than ever before that allow individuals to create their own products without extensive coding knowledge. This means that even if you don’t consider yourself a “techie,” you still have the potential to develop and bring to life your own innovative ideas.
- Resilience, stress tolerance and flexibility
In today’s VUCA world, which is characterized by volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity, there is pressure from all directions. As a result, the skill cluster of endurance, pressure handling, and flexibility should be given greater importance in the top 10 skills. These skills can be developed more easily if you possess the aforementioned skills.
However, these skills cannot be built solely through personal “mental strength” or “positive thinking.” Rather, they require a tripod with three legs:
Firstly, good physical health, which includes getting enough sleep, following a scientific nutrition plan, and engaging in regular exercise.
Secondly, good mental health, which involves seeking help when needed and avoiding toxic environments.
Lastly, a good network, which includes empathetic relationships, psychological safety, and people who are willing to support you both in and out of the workplace.
- Reasoning, problem solving and ideation
Once again, problem-solving is emphasized. Logical reasoning is essential to effectively tackle problems, and ideation can lead to finding good solutions. It is important to generate a wide range of ideas, rather than solely focusing on finding a perfect idea.
